The Cincinnati Reds have made a set of roster moves today prior to the start of their 2-game series in Cleveland against the Guardians. Right-handed starting pitcher Julian Aguiar is heading to the 15-day injured list with a right elbow sprain. Taking his place on the roster will be right-handed reliever Ian Gibaut.
The news for Julian Aguiar isn’t exactly great. First, his season is officially over with just five games remaining and his being placed on the 15-day injured list. Second is the fact that he reportedly has an elbow sprain. And the word sprain implies some sort of tear. With that said, there have been more than a few times in which someone used the word sprain instead of strain (or the other way around). Even if it is a tear of some sort, the amount of pitchers in the big leagues with clean elbows can probably be counted on one hand. Until we get a little more information on the extent of the injury we’ll advise a little bit of caution.
Ian Gibaut just completed a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville. He has been out for the entire year and will be making an appearance with the big league club in the final week of the season.
After dealing with some elbow soreness in the spring, Gibaut underwent anterior interosseous nerve release surgery in early May. It would be another two months after that before he began a throwing program.
On September 15th he began a second rehab assignment (he began one in April and was shut down). His first three outings saw him give up a run in each outing and a total of five runs in 2.2 innings on seven hits – including two home runs. In his final outing with the Bats he threw a hitless inning with a walk. He didn’t strike out any of the 19 batters he faced while on rehab.
