Cincinnati Reds vs Chicago Cubs – September 29, 2024

The final day of the regular season is upon us. And with that has come plenty of disappointment as the Reds, who were expected to compete for at least a wild card spot, are instead hoping to avoid finishing in last place in the National League Central. Cincinnati is also looking to avoid being swept and to score their first run of this series this afternoon against the Chicago Cubs. First pitch is set for 3:20m ET.

After missing five weeks, Hunter Greene returned to the mound last week and allowed a run in 3.0 innings against Pittsburgh. Today he’ll finish his season and look to get a few extra outs and push his season total over the 150-innings mark.

This will only be the second outing of the year for Kilian in the big leagues and only his eighth big league outing of his career. He missed the first half of the season before being activated in July where he first pitched out of the bullpen in Triple-A before moving into the rotation in August.

Reds expected to try and trade for Sonny Gray

This morning Bob Nightengale of USA Today had some notes as the season comes to an end and one of them was that St. Louis would be looking to shop Sonny Gray on the trade market as they look to cut payroll. Along with that he noted that the Reds were expected to be aggressive in trying to trade for him. We wrote a lot more about it here and how it could be a very expensive acquisition.

Can the Reds avoid a last place finish?

Things aren’t entirely within their control as the Reds enter the final day of the season tied for last place with the Pittsburgh Pirates, who face off against the New York Yankees.
