A former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed condolences over the fire incident at Aleshinloye Market in Ibadan, Oyo State, and the tanker explosion on Otedola Bridge in Lagos, which resulted in the loss of lives and property.

In a statement on his X handle on Wednesday, Atiku sympathised with the victims and called for increased awareness of fire safety measures in public spaces.

“I have just been informed about the fire incident at the Aleshinloye Market in Ibadan, which razed many stalls and wares, and the tragic tanker explosion on the Otedola Bridge in Lagos, which claimed two lives and left three others injured,” he said.

The Aleshinloye Market fire destroyed several shops and goods worth millions of naira, leaving many traders devastated.

Meanwhile, the Otedola bridge tanker explosion resulted in the loss of two lives, with three others sustaining injuries.

Atiku extended his condolences to the affected families and the governments of Oyo and Lagos states.

“I express my sympathy to the families of the victims of both incidents. I also extend my condolences to Governor Seyi Makinde and the government of Oyo State on the Aleshinloye Market fire, as well as to the families affected by the Otedola Bridge explosion, and the government and people of Lagos State,” he stated.

He further prayed for divine restoration for those who lost their livelihoods and a speedy recovery for the injured.

“It is my prayer that the Almighty shall replenish the losses for those affected and grant a speedy recovery to the injured,” he added.

Highlighting the urgency of fire prevention and management, Atiku emphasised the need for enhanced safety measures to prevent future tragedies, particularly during this season.

“These unfortunate incidents reinforce the urgent need for increased awareness about fire management in markets, public places, and on our roads, especially during this season of the year. I urge all relevant authorities to strengthen safety measures and preparedness to prevent future occurrences,” he advised.
