The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) arrested two suspects in Nanyuki, Laikipia County, on Friday, as part of a nationwide crackdown on the sale of shisha.
The authorities, led by Senior Superintendent of Police Nicholas Kosgey, also seized 10 shisha pots, 16 flavor boxes, and assorted paraphernalia.
The arrests follow a warning from NACADA CEO Dr Anthony Omerikwa to businesses still dealing in shisha, emphasising that the agency’s enforcement efforts will remain relentless.
“The sale and use of shisha is illegal in Kenya, and NACADA will not relent in its efforts to eradicate this public health menace,” said Omerikwa.
He added, “This operation in Nanyuki is part of our sustained nationwide crackdown, and we urge the public to report any outlets flouting the law.”
NACADA has increased surveillance on shisha sales, especially in entertainment hubs, to ensure compliance with the 2017 ban due to the severe health risks associated with the substance, including addiction and respiratory diseases.
Kosgey further urged the public to report businesses involved in selling shisha via a toll-free line and warned that violators would face the full force of the law.
“We will continue conducting such operations without prior notice. Business owners must adhere to the law or risk arrest and prosecution,” he said.
The suspects were taken to Nanyuki Police Station and are awaiting further investigations.
