The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Dr. Zacch Adedeji, has indicated that the organization was re-strategising to increase voluntary compliance by tax-paying members of the public.
This is even as the Tax Bills currently before the National Assembly as expected to significantly increase the nation’s tax revenue.
He spoke at the West Africa Tax Administrators Forum (WATAF) Country Correspondents/Conference /Training for Heads of Corporate Communications, in Abuja, yesterday.
“The role of effective communication in tax administration cannot be overstated. As Country Correspondents and Heads of Corporate Communications, you are the frontline ambassadors of our tax institutions, responsible for shaping narratives, clarifying policies, and fostering voluntary compliance”, Dr. Adedeji said.
He said that WATAF Council would deliberate on issues bordering on its institutional sustainability, consider the WATAF progress report alongside carrying out other administrative overview of WATAF Secretariat’s operations.
The Chairman said Nigeria has always been at the forefront of promoting international tax cooperation and has been a key contributor to the development of the West African Tax Administration Forum (WATAF), providing technical assistance and capacity-building programs to member countries.
According to him, “Our country has also been at the forefront of promoting regional cooperation in tax administration, recognising the importance of collaboration in addressing common challenges.
“The FIRS remains committed to supporting initiatives that drive tax policy development and capacity-building, not just in Nigeria but across the West African region. We recognise the importance of domestic resource mobilisation in achieving economic development and growth.”
The FIRS boss urged participants to actively engage in discussions, leverage the gathering to build stronger professional networks, and commit to implementing the knowledge gained for the betterment of our tax systems.
He commended WATAF for continuously providing a platform that fosters collaboration and capacity-building across West African tax administrations.
