Kajiado leaders have mourned former Woman Representative Janet Teyiaa, describing her as a selfless individual who worked tirelessly despite living with a disability.

Teyiaa passed away on Monday after ailing for a while. She got disabled through polio at the age of five but overcame the challenge and was first nominated to Parliament in 2013 by the Jubilee Party.

“It is with deep sorrow that I have received the news of the passing of Janet Teyiaa, former Women Representative for Kajiado County. On behalf of the people of Kajiado, the County Government, and my own family, I extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and the entire community she so diligently served,” mourned Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku.

The governor said the late Teyiaa was more than just a leader, a trailblazer, as both a nominated and later elected Member of Parliament.

“She rose through the ranks of leadership with grace, resilience, and unwavering  commitment,” said Lenku in a statement.

The governor noted that despite the personal challenges she faced as a person living with a disability, Teyiaa became a powerful voice for women, youth, and people with disabilities, never allowing her limitations to define her service.

“She was a woman of integrity, courage, and compassion—a true daughter of Kajiado, who devoted her life to championing the rights and welfare of the marginalized. Her legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched and the progressive policies she championed,” he added. Nominated Senator Peris Tobiko said Teyiaa will be remembered as an icon of peace in the county. She said she spoke with Teyiaa over the weekend, and Teyiaa had complained of chest congestion. “I later learned of her passing,” she said.
