The Cincinnati Reds had an early lead but couldn’t hold on as Milwaukee would use a 3-run 4th inning to take the lead. A home run in the 5th from Jonathan India tied the game up and that’s where things stayed until the Brewers scored the winning run in the top of the 10th inning to take the first game of a day/night doubleheader in Cincinnati on Friday afternoon.

The Reds grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Elly De La Cruz came around to score on a ground out by TJ Friedl. The lead lasted for about four minutes as Willy Adames homered to lead off the 2nd inning. Cincinnati took the lead back in the bottom of the inning when Santiago Espinal hit a 1-out solo home run. Will Benson followed up with a double and he came in to score on a single by De La Cruz that made it 3-1.
In the bottom of the third the Brewers were threatening with two outs when Jackson Chourio doubled to the wall in center that saw TJ Friedl crash hard into the padding. The very next pitch saw Rhys Hoskins clobber another ball to center, this time with Friedl leaping at the wall to rob what would have been a game-tying home run.
The next inning saw the Brewers get another leadoff home run as William Contreras hit one into the seats in right-center. A single and a double followed to put two men in scoring position. Nick Martinez got a pop up and then struck out Joey Ortiz, but he couldn’t get out of the jam as Sal Frelick came through with a 2-run single to put Milwaukee on top 4-3. Jonathan India was able to tie things back up with a leadoff home run – an absolute rocket – down the left field line in the bottom of the 5th inning.
Nick Martinez returned to the mound to begin the 6th but gave up an infield single with one out and that ended his day. Buck Farmer came into the game and got Gary Sanchez to ground into a double play on the first pitch he threw, ending the inning.
Cincinnati got themselves into trouble on the bases in the 8th inning. Ty France hit the ball off of the wall in right-center, but center fielder Garrett Mitchell played it perfectly on the bounce and turned and fired the ball to second to throw France out. Rece Hinds came off of the bench with two outs and drew a walk, but he was then picked off to end the inning.
Milwaukee did a little bit of the same in the top of the 9th. Blake Wilson picked up a 1-out single, but Justin Wilson caught him going to second on the first move and tossed to first base where Spencer Steer then threw to Jonathan India to apply the tag and record the out. India landed funny on his wrist on the play, but stayed in the game. Wilson then struck out Gary Sanchez to send the game to the bottom of the 9th. Luke Maile singled with two outs to get the tying run on, but Jonathan India struck out to end the inning and the game headed to the 10th.
Milwaukee pinch ran for Gary Sanchez to begin the 10th inning. They also sent Brice Turang to the plate as a pinch hitter and he laid down a perfect bunt and beat it out for a single. Alexis Diaz then got a grounder to second and the Reds turned a double play, but the run scored from third base to put the Brewers up 5-4.
Cincinnati began the bottom of the inning with Jonathan India at second base and Elly De La Cruz at the plate, facing Devin Williams. A close pitch on a 3-1 count went the way of the Brewers and was called a strike, and then Williams picked up the strikeout when De La Cruz went a little too far on a checked swing. Spencer Steer then flew out to shallow left field, leaving the game up to TJ Friedl. During the at-bat India moved up to third on a wild pitch, and then Friedl worked a walk to put runners on the corners. Ty France battled with Williams for 10 pitches, but the 10th pitch was a lazy fly out to right field to end the game.
Key Moment of the Game
Ty France’s fly out to end the game with the tying run at third base.
Notes Worth Noting
I believe this is correct but there’s a chance I didn’t use the database correctly – but it appears that Elly De La Cruz’s double put him into the 30 double – 20 home run – 60 steal club with Joe Morgan (1973, 1976), Rickey Henderson (1986, 1990), and Ronald Acuna Jr. (2023).
Luke Maile entered the 9th inning in an 0-29 slump, but the first pitch he saw went back up the middle for a single.
Matt Wilkes had this note on twitter following the game: Alejo Lopez singled against Devin Williams on September 11th of 2022. The Reds have faced him 45 times since then and have not picked up a hit.
Later today Rhett Lowder will make his big league debut as he gets the start in game two of today’s doubleheader. We wrote about what you can expect to see from him earlier this week if you’d like a bit of a refresher.
